Chapter Five

MARNEY WOKE UP feeling like an elephant had been sitting on her face and chest. Tubes extended down her nose. Another one came from somewhere near her sternum and drained a light pink fluid into a clear plastic container. Her right arm was encased in a cast, immobilized to be held off the bed several inches.

Her lips were parched, and when she tried to lick them, it sounded like she had a mouthful of tissue paper. She tried to rotate her head, but her entire neck felt bruised, swollen. The pain was nearly unbearable. As she tried to scan the room, even her eyes hurt as they did their quick search.

A huge bouquet of fresh flowers took up the entire top of a metal cart, positioned to be the first thing her eyes would see when she woke up.

Carefully, she rotated her head, leaving her chin up, which seemed to cause less pain. Her room hosted another bed, but it was vacant. She heard the paging system and saw people blur past the eight inch open crack between her door and the wall. Someone had left her in a semi-dark room, thank goodness. Her left arm had an IV inserted, but taped to her hand was a smooth plastic device. When she held it up in front of her face, she saw it was a call button. She pressed the red button with her thumb, and in several seconds, a bright young fresh-faced nurse appeared.

“Oh, you’re awake, Miss Hansen. Or is it Mrs?”

Marney had to think a bit before she could answer, as her brows drew together.

The young nurse inspected her eyes with a small flashlight. “Sorry, you’re probably groggy and still a little dazed. It’s normal.” She examined her IV and then asked if she was in pain.

“Yes.” Her words escaped her mouth like the hissing of a balloon with a small leak. With effort, she added, “Thirsty.”

“I’ll bet you are. Let me find a nice cool washcloth for your lips, and I’ll check on something for the pain.”

Images of the accident flooded in. The cab of the huge truck appeared only a second before she heard the awful screech of tires and the scream of metal, throwing her to the side and entangling her in her seatbelt, which nearly strangled her. She remembered hanging upside down for a brief second until her truck stopped rotating, righting itself. Then came the searing heat and she inhaled thick black smoke as everything faded to black. For a brief second before she lost consciousness, she heard a familiar voice calling her name. She closed her eyes and tried to concentrate.

“Marney,” the man’s voice said. It sounded like a whisper of wind, an echo coming from the deep part of the ocean, as if she’d been beckoned there. She replayed his whisper in her mind over and over again. When she opened her eyes, she was staring at the flowers, and she knew somehow the two were connected.

“Here you go, sweetie,” the nurse said, bringing in a damp washcloth, putting it to her mouth.
